What university is the best to study law in western australia?

What are the requirements to practice law in Victoria, Australia?

  • Good morning everyone. My name is Robert, and I am a 16 year old aspiring lawyer. I realize that I still have another two years of high school, and then four to five years of university (depending on where I go; Monash University is my first preference) but lately I've been curious as to what I need to do to study law in the state of Victoria. I realize that I have to go to law school, that much is obvious, but after that all the answers I've come across are rather vague. I know that in the United States of America and all across Europe you must sit, and pass, a Bar Examination, but I'm under the impression that isn't required in Australia, or at least Victoria. If this is so, is there an exam we have to do, or is it just enough to have sufficient knowledge in the Priestley 11? Thank you in advance.

Hi Robert Great to hear that you are interested in studying at Monash Law School! If you want to practice law, there are a number of steps you need to take: 1. Successfully complete an undergraduate (or Juris Doctor) degree. A Bachelor of Laws is a fine start to your career, but you can improve your career options and professional outcomes by combining your law degree with another discipline in a double degree. In a double degree you undertake both degrees simultaneously, enabling you to complete both degrees in a shorter time than taking each degree separately. At Monash Law School in addition to the Bachelor of Laws we offer a wide range of double degrees to help you enhance studies and your career options. 2. Complete your practical legal training – You can get practical legal training through articles of clerkship with a law firm or through private providers such as Leo Cussen Institute or the College of Law. 3. Be admitted to practise 4. Attain a practising certificate You can find more information about each of these steps by visiting: http://www.law.monash.edu.au/future-students/undergraduate/how-to-become-a-lawyer.html Let us know if you have any further questions and good luck with your studies! You have to go to uni for about 5 years then if you pass you will be given an admission date which is set by the Law Society of Victoria. There is no special exam involved, another solicitor can perform the admission. When you leave uni you will seek employment as a paralegal in a law firm and then wait for your admission. This is generally only a month or so after you graduate.
