Can I get a job in the FBI with an online degree?

  • I'm looking to change careers and have always been interested in the FBI, CIA, etc., as an agent or professional. I'm pushing the maximum age requirement to enter and do not have a degree. I was looking into the online colleges, noticing that you can receive a Bachelor's Degree in 2-3 years. The FBI states that you need a 4 year degree to apply. If I received a Bachelor's in an accredited online school, does that qualify???

  • Answer:

I used to be a job recruiter with another Federal agency. We never accepted any online degree. There have been widespread reports of students hiring impostors to take online courses for them. This means any online degree is considered questionable. In an agency like the FBI, with the importance of background checks, having a legitimate degree is even more important. Any degree from a for-profit college or any online degree will be considered questionable.

No. Online "degrees" are like a tech school and that is only IF you find a good one. Most are not accredited and are worth about as much as the paper that they are printed on. A 4 year degree must be from a full fledged accredited university.

Yes, you may use an online degree program in support of an application to work for the FBI, provided a legitimate online school granted the degree. A degree indicates that a person has completed a course of study, acquiring a certain body of knowledge. That you gained such knowledge online (as opposed to being in an actual classroom) will make no difference in terms of you eligibility for the job. When you're looking at online programs, check to see if they're accredited. That's something of a guarantee that they're legitimate and that their degrees have value. (Accrediting organizations serve as something of a control mechanism for educational institutions. In other words, they examine course offerings and determine if they are worthwhile.)

No, you need to first become a police officer, then take the examination to be an FBI agent as well as many other tasks. I do believe you need a degree in criminology too.
