Can i still claim jsa if i earn £85 a week?

Can i still claim jsa while working 2 days a week unpaid?

  • my daughter is currently in a paid part time job 7 days a week but its getting to much for her and she is becoming unwell. Can i take 2 days off her in her job unpaid without it affecting my jsa?

  • Answer:

I know this for a fact. You can work up to 16 hours a week without it affecting your jsa. It can be paid as well and it will not affect your benefits at all so do not worry. The only thing is that you must let the Job Centre know as it is a requirement to inform them of any changes in your personal circumstances. Log on to the jobcentreplus website to put your mind at ease. The answer will be the same, you can do paid work for 16 hours so go for it.

It would be an unusual arrangement for an employer, they may have health and safety issues with someone working who is not an employee. However, if the employer is happy you would not be able to take any money from your daughter at all during the period you work there. Even "borrowing" money from her would be an issue. Does your daughter live in your house? If she does and she contributes to anything including gas, electric, joint food shopping or "rent" to you there will also be an issue. Obviously she doesn't want to lose income however you really need to consider the implications of the idea. If work ismaking your daughter unwell by taking on her hours and allowing her to keep the money the lesson it is teaching her is not a good one, how long before she can (or wants!) to go back to working those hours? In summary, yes you can claim JSA while doing "voluntary work" however, this is a very odd situation. It looks very dodgy and you may be reported several times and need to explain yourselves. JSA also have rules with how many hours you can work in a voluntary position as it effects how much jobhunting you can do a week so check with your advisor. Personally I'd advised her to cut down her hours or rearrange so she has 2 days off and rests on those days rather than do her work for her. It teaches her she can get money for nothing :( PS James: you can work up to 15.99 hours pw and claim JSA however if your income is above £70pw you will recieve no JSA just NI contributions.

If the employer os OK with that, then they will have to stop payment to your daughter for the 2 days she doesn't work, as you will be there on a voluntary arrangement. You will have to inform the Job Centre any way, so it's best to talk to them about it properly.

If you're not getting paid for for doing it don't see the problem, after all you're just helping your daughter out arent you.
