Patent law - profession?

  • Hello, I am a Ph.D. in chemistry and am contemplating going into a more interdisciplinary career such as patent law. What kind of career profiles exist in patent law - as in, joining a company, practicing privately, or providing consultation, etc. Can I do it as a part-time job, at least in the beginning, while I hold a position elsewhere? Can I do patent law online and how meritorious will it be? If I plan to become a patent lawyer full time, how long would it take and what sort of pay scales can I expect. How stressful is the job? Thanks

  • Answer:

You need to talk to a patent law attorney or a law school dean. What is the closest law school to you. Go talk to one of their deans, someone who may know about patent law. Tell them what you want to do and see how realistic that is, what the outlay ($) would be, etc. Also look in the phone book under attorneys, lawyers. Find a patent law firm. Get a patent law attorney on the phone and ask them if you could talk to them about the profession. Do patent law attorneys have an association? Talk to them. Research it.
