At what point am I entitled to overtime pay working part time?

I work part time at the moment and have at the same place years now, so I have a great relationship with my fellow co-workers and boss. It's definitely an ideal flexible and laid back work place. I was just curious though...I rarely ever have to work over time, but the time that I do usually result in 13 hour days. At what point am I entitled to time-and-a-half? I always assumed it was anything over 9 hours in a day or so... I normally work 20-25 hours a week and do NOT have a "contractual" amount of set hours...I just kind of work when I want really lol, so...is it calculated on a day-to-day basis or only by the week's total hours? Like if I go over 25 hours, then i start getting over time pay... Thanks for any help on clearing this up.

First of all, are you exempt? If so (usually for salary jobs) then they don't have to pay you overtime. If you are not exempt, you are owed overtime based on state laws. In my state, CA, you would get overtime for working more than 8 hours in one day, and/or working more than 40 hours in one week. In most other states, it's based on working more than 40 hours in one week.

Hyd, I'm not sure what state you are in, and some state laws are different, but in *general,* overtime is paid for time worked over 40 hours per week. This for sure applies to Oregon and KY. I am pretty sure I'm correct here. So, no matter how many hours you work in one day, unless it tips you over the 40 hour/week scale, you will not receive any overtime pay.
Unless you're in California, you assumed wrong about the "over 9 hours". In other states, it's based on working over 40 hours in a week just like anyone else. Your part time status doesn't give you and special rules.

in most US states, you have to work over 40 hrs in a pay week to be eligible for overtime - a couple of states do have an "OT after 8 hour day" rule - (California I think is one) google it for your state - a 13 hr day does not necessarily mean you worked "overtime" if your state does it by the DAY and not week, I'm sure you would be getting paid for it - that is not something any legitimate employer is going to try to get around - massive fines and penalties can be levied on an employer for breaking those kind of rules
