Should I go for Nursing or Athletic Training?

Unpaid training legal or illegal?

  • I have just been hired by a nursing type home for the elderly so I called twice last week trying to find out my training dates they kept telling me we will call you next week. Well on Thursday they called me at 1130 pm saying I have been scheduled to work?!? I was supposed to be there at 11 the boss was angry with me but nobody called to inform me or start my training I came in at 1200am with out any training at all to take care of pretty much bedridden elderly people without any experence! That's wrong what makes it worse is they put me with a lady that doesn't know any English at all I don't know Spanish so I worked like this for 2 nights helping with showers diapers etc now they they were telling me to come in last night for training when I was already scheduled to work for 8 hours unpaid?!? I didn't go because I think it's pretty much illegal anybody have any insight? and this is someone that's trusted to take care of dying loved ones putting me in there with no training?!? What is her problem this is so wrong

  • Answer:

I dont know the federal or state laws that apply. Training must be paid no matter where you work, and if your not paid, you call the state liscensing of nursing homes, and you call the labor board. They do not have to cut you a check quicker than normal pay periods when you quit like that. So the day payroll is due, show up, and if theres no check, tell them u are going to the nursing home liscensing board and labor board about this. I would imagine, since basics is all your doing, the same you could do for your own parent, theres no liscense or training needed. It sounds like their not run very well, and they needed someone to fill in quick, so they brought you in. On the job training sounds more like what they do, so its like learning as your doing the job, its working and training all at once, not necessarily sitting down, reading, being lectured too and testing ok. I could be wrong, but the job if it wasnt for you, it wasnt for you. I too have had jobs call and say well tell u soon when u start, never call then 2 weeks later say ok tomarrow, their just poor run places, and also, it could be the person doing the hiring, can only do so much, and has to wait for thier loser boss to tell them, when to call you. Many businesses are poorly run, you dont complain, the money still spends the same. We dont get hired to critique a business right?: We get hired to take orders and perfrom duties and thats it. So find a job with work you like, and realise, there will never be the perfect job.

If this was a Nursing Home report this information to the State you worked in. This is totally irresponsible. How dare this Nursing Home exploit people who cannot defend themselves. How dare they for exploiting you for free labor. Keep all proof and please report them.

Unless you are student doing clinical all on the job training must be paid. It is wrong that people that are trusted with taking care of loved ones are untrained, but it happens a lot. I would inform the labor dept of your state and also an ombudsman

You should have gone to the unpaid training then challenged it.......your refusal gives them the right to terminate you......sorry.......
