Can I collect unemployment in Illinois?

In illinois, can i still collect unemployment after i was fired for no call no show?

  • I really hate my job, I have been with the company for a few years and now feel like i cant do it anymore. I want to give myself some time in finding a new job but don't want to go back to my old position. Since I don't think they would let me go on a severance I am wondering if I should just stop going until they fire me. But I am worried that I will not be able to collect unemployment if I do this?

  • Answer:

No way. No benefits for immaturity.

No, you can't. You don't get UE for being voluntarily unemployed.

Unemployment eligibility is basically based on three things: 1. You are not working "through no fault of your own". If you no call/no show or quit, that would be considered your fault. Your fault = not eligible. 2. You are actively seeking work and have not turned down work offered to you. If you no call/no show or quit - you are essentially turning down work offered to you. You turn down work = not eligible. 3. You are available for work. You don't have a problem here because as you state you are going to make yourself available should you be offered a job - by quitting.

No unemployment if you are fired. 'No call, no show' is your misconduct. Instead, spend the weekend with a nice fresh legal pad and start analyzing, making notes of what you really want, and plot your route to get there. Then make plans: do you need/want to go back to college, just want another job in your area, move across town or across the country - what? Do you just need to take a good vacation - and have plenty of funds to live off while you holiday & job hunt? Then get started, tackle item 1 on your Action Plan, item 2... Once you know what you really want, go after it. If you working hard on your plans, you won't notice how badly you hate that job for a few more weeks while you find another or whatever. But don't quit your day job yet. You have some work to do first.
