Am I eligible for Unemployment Benefits in Ma?

Will I be entitled to Unemployment Benefits in Ma?

  • was terminated for takin care of an ill relative (In im Ma BTW) I had called in for several days to take care of an ill relative (cancer), my boss was ok with it and understood my situation. I needed to take extra time to remain caring for the relative and takin care of her daughters. My boss asked me if I could come back on day 5, I explained I could not, I needed to take care of my sister and her kids ( we lost our parents a while back and only have each other). I had never missed any time in the year I was there, was top sales person and never strayed from the handbook at all. He terminated me for personal issues. He had explained that he understood that my family was more important, and good luck with everything. Will I be entitled to unemployment benfits?

  • Answer:

All you can do is apply and find out. In most states you wouldn't be eligible, but the clause you quote might give you some room for eligibility.

It depends on if the company is going to fight the claim. If in fact the employer fights the UI claim, you will be denied benefits because you needed to take care of a sick related and not eligible for fmla. Some states are very generous and will deemed on the employee side if the situation would have call for reasonable absenteeism.
