Do employers really check if you have a degree?

How many years are employers required to go back in background checks ?

  • Ive applied for jobs where theyve went back 17 years thru a temp agency, then there were some that only went back 7 years, some just check the State and some check State and Federal. Am i doomed?. I have a state conviction from 1993, and a federal from 1999. How can I get around this to utilize my associates degree ive obained in Computer Networking? It seems that no matter how much education Ive obtained, employers discriminate on the basis of these old convictions. Is there anyone that will hire me so that i can take care of my family? I need help...Doors are getting slammed in my face in DC where I am looking.

    It is at the discretion of the employer as to how far back to go. If you work around children, or banking, or medicines, most will want to check as far back as possible. My employer went back 40 years, because I was applying to work with children. Too bad the choices made when you were younger are affecting you now, but that is life.

Your criminal history is public information. Anyone can access it. How long a potential employer chooses to look back is not governed by law, but by company policy. Check with your state Employment Commission or any other state run employment service. There are programs in force where employers get tax credits in exchange for hiring people like yourself. The state will have lists of employers who participate in those programs. Good luck

depends on the company and their choice, some only go back 10 yrs some only 7 but companies like ups go all the way back complete background check right from day one

Each employer chooses his own scope of the background check. I've had checks going back to high school (for people over 50 years old)
