Is a provisional worker job secure?

"Co-worker" chewed me out for being 3 minutes late for a job I'm not even obligated to work at?

  • I put co-worker in quotes because he's not really an official co-worker. Which is the whole reason I'm even asking this in the first place. I quit this job 8 months ago, but regretted it later. Either way they always knew to call on me if an emergency popped up. Well, it did. I have been gladly working there for the past 3 weeks, because our boss has been in the hospital with her husband. But I also have a permanent job. So, I'm not really obligated to be at the one I quit 8 months ago. I just enjoy being there so I'm more than happy to help when I can. Well, I was 3 minutes late there today. And my, not really co-worker anymore, chewed me out. He's not even the boss, and I'm don't even have to be there! I have a permanent job. Like I said, I'm working there out of the kindness of my heart, and I'm there pretty much every time they have needed me. I could drop them anytime I feel like it. But, I choose not to. And THIS is how I'm thanked. Was I well within my rights of being ticked off at him for this? I mean, I am not obligated to be there. I am there by choice. And I was only 3 minutes late to a job that isn't even mandatory. How would you feel?

  • Answer:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your kind service, loyalty and considerate attitude towards this unworthy company. I'm sure there are others in the same company that sees your real value and am thankful (especially the real boss) :)

When in Rome...! Whether you're 'obligated' to be there or not, a schedule is a schedule. Showing up late shows a lack of respect for the workplace and is rude to the people who have to punch a clock. Imagine you were a paid member of a work crew and some volunteer moseyed in three minutes after the truck was supposed to leave. How would you feel? Why should it be different for an office?

It does seem inappropriate for anyone other than a supervisor to critique your choice in arriving late. (probably not really a conscious choice, things just happen sometimes.) You describe an entire workplace that seems alittle out of sync. It was nice of you to go back and fill in when they called, but you do acknowledge that it is temporary. But "happy to help out" makes it sound like you don't mind if they expect you to work two jobs without much appreciation. You may want to consider saying no - make this company fulfill their own personnel needs without imposing on you. Once the boss is out of the hospital, you may want to share your concerns with her privately. Let her know you were glad to help, but she has a much bigger problem she doesn't realize. You are not responsible for their lack of planning. Good luck.

wait for them to do it then hand it right back to them
