Is it difficult to get a job as a lawyer?

This question is for a lawyer, judge, or an expert. How do I get my records wiped clean for a job?

  • I have 6 years clean and sober on 11/20/2011 and I'm in college right now. I have been in school for 1 /1/2 years and I'm transferring to a 2 year university to get my degree in respiratory therapy probably in a year. I have a felony that was reduced to a gross misdemeanor that I got around 7-8 years ago for possession of a crystal methamphetamine pipe and some marijuana charges that I got prior to that. I was told that I can get my records expunged and that will wipe my records clean like I never got in trouble. Before I apply for my two year college and when I apply for a respiratory therapy job they will run background checks and in theory after I get them expunged my records will come back clean. Someone told me otherwise and said that if my records get expunged the college and the potential employer that would hire me for a respiratory therapy job would still see my records and they would not accept me or hire me. The last thing I want to do is invest years of my life and then not get a job. What is your input? Thank you for your input, I really appreciate it.

  • Answer:

The only way you will find out is to talk to a criminal lawyer period. Colleges don't give a rat a+s if you have a record or not, only that they will take your money. If you get a job or a license after you graduate is irrelevant to them. Don't waste another penny till you talk to a lawyer and verify (IF) you can get your records expunged or not. good luck

Other answers

Colleges do not run criminal records they do not care if you can be employed or not only that you pay your fees. Generally speaking 6 years is not long enough expunged and not all states offer it. You need to check your states laws. An easier route is generally to ask for a governors pardon which has the same effect and is free. Since you are asking on this forum it is doubtful you have the resources to hire a lawyer for expunged records and they really go away certain jobs will always be able to get the information and your record if you get into trouble again will be used for sentencing.
