Is this change in work hours legal?
-
I started working at a well know restaurant chain 4 months ago and was brought on as a 16 hour contract, and I was getting 16 hours or more when I started but now I am only getting 3 hours a week and the next few weeks have no hours at all. the restaurant isn't as busy as it was in the start but I applied for the job as it was for 16 hours. After starting I told the manager that I could no longer do Sundays as I have another commitment. The manager agreed at the time but has since told other members of staff that he isn't giving me hours because ive 'messed him around' and that hes going to make my life difficult to try and get me to quit. Im good at my job and have had no issues up until not being able to do Sundays. Can they just change my hours without a new contract and if not what can I do about it? Also what can I do about the manager doing this on purpose. There is no higher ups I can go to as they all work in England and im in Northern Ireland.

Answer:
Well yeah, that is what happens. You contracted for a certain number of hours which was what the employer wanted so he hired you. Then you decided to change the number of hours you were available so you broke the contract yourself. He is not going to fire you because of the contract but he feels you are disloyal and self serving and he is right. How low does he have to go for you to get the hint and quit?
