Advice for becoming a pastry chef?

I think I want to become a chef? Any advice?

  • I'm 18 and about to graduate from high school. I've been undecided about what career I want to go into. Truthfully there's nothing I'm REALLY passionate about and I'm not particularly great at any class in school. Within the past year I realized I really like cooking and i've become more and more interested in it. So now i'm thinking about pursuing a career in it. I'm a bit more interested in becoming a pastry chef because I'm much more interested in/like making desserts more. However one objective for me is I would like to make a salary that would enable me to live comfortably. I don't need to be rich or anything but I don't want to be living paycheck to paycheck and I'm wondering if becoming any type of chef would pay well. I know cooking is only part of the job which is fine because I have great people skills and planning skills (whether it's for a party, a dinner, an event, etc.). I live in Los Angeles and I'm not interested in moving at all, does this make any difference? Any advice or insight about this career would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

  • Answer:

Shopper might be right but there are a lot of things besides working as a chef in a restauraunt, if you want a career in pastry you could start catering after you finish your training i think on average caterer's make more money than chef's working at a restraunt. I'm also interested in a culinary career so i'd go with it if i were you good luck! :)
