How do you become a good dishwasher in a restaurant?

Dishwasher job at a restaurant--no breaks?

  • Hi, So my little brother who is still in high school just got a job at a popular restaurant as a dishwasher. He was so happy to start his first job in a restaurant as his goal is to become a chef after graduation. His first day of work was an 8 hour and 15 minute shift and he only had a 5-minute dinner break where he quickly gobbled up his food, used the washroom, then presumed his dish washing. I thought this was strange because normally aren't you supposed to get one half hour break for an 8 hour shift, and a 15 minute break for each 4 hours you work? He was also told to do some dangerous things like stand on an unstable crate to reach a tall shelf to get a large glass bowl.

  • Answer:

In California, If you work an 8 hour shift, they have to give you a 30 minute meal break and a 10 minute break within the first 4 hours and another 10 minute break within the last 4 hours of your shift. Also, overtime is to be paid on any amount of time over 8 hours in a day.
