What's the education requirements for a nurse practitioner?

Whats the better route AS or BS in nursing?

  • My ultimate goal is to become a neonatal nurse practitioner the route to get there is where I am stuck. I am currently at a community college with 72 credit hours. I am eligible to graduate with my AA. But should I try to get my AS in nursing, become an RN, maybe work 1 year and than continue my education. OR should I transfer to a university and just get my BS and become an RN through that and continue my education that way? Does one or the other give you more experience or is it pretty much equal? Thanks

  • Answer:

They both lead to rn, but.. getting you bsn puts you closer to becoming a nurse practitioner. That would be the equivalent of a masters degree. I just finished a ASN program. Here's my problem. A lot of hospitals are trying to be magna status (spelling might be off). This means that they only hire nurses with at least a bsn. This is their way of phasing out ASNurses. So,... it might cost more, but your better off.

If you want to be an NP you should go for your BSN. You will need to get it anyways so the AA is just a wasted step.
