What is it like to be a Speech and Language Pathologist?

Career change from RN,BSN to Speech Language Pathologist?

  • Ok so I am an RN with a BSN. I am overworked, under paid, and I constantly work understaffed putting my license at risk. I forgot to mention I am burnt out at the young age of 28. Nursing is draining me, I am 28 but I feel like I'm 58. I really want to go back to school for my masters and was thinking about doing an total career change from nursing to speech language pathologist. Is this a wise move to make? Especially i'm the unstable economy where the thought of closing hospitals actually exists.

  • Answer:

you would need to take some post-bac classes before you can start the actual SLP program (for most colleges that is), since most have a BS/MS combo program and they work some of their SLP programs into their BS program. have you considered NP? that way your BSN doesn't go to waste completely. But do what makes you happiest! You'll be doing this for days and days for years and years to come and you don't want to dread going to work everyday. Find out more info on SLP programs that you want to go to. Talk with advisors to get more info on cost, length, etc. Find info from current SLP and see what they say about the job. Job shadow a SLP before you make your decision to make sure that this is what you want to do.
