What's the different between medical administrative assistant and medical billing and coding?

Would a career in Medical Billing/coding or Pharmacy Assistant be a better choice?

  • Any info on medical billing and or pharmacy assistant would be a great help!!!! How much salary is possible in each and schooling requirements?

  • Answer:

I think that both careers are ideal given that the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that health care will increase by 3 million jobs in the next decade. It's a great way to join a growing industry without having to be involved in the clinical aspect of health care. The salary potential for a medical biller/coder is a bit higher than a pharmacy technician ($30,610 vs. $27,705 for median annual wage), but I think that finding a pharmacy job might be easier at the onset of your career. You can be become certified in both careers, which I think is a must no matter what career path you choose. Also, the pharmacy technician curriculum is a bit easier than medical billing/coding. I think that the bottom line is that you should consider what you'd enjoy doing more - a pharmacy technician is going to work in a pharmacy setting interacting with people and standing a lot, while a biller/coder is going to work independently on a computer in an office setting (or from home). Both have great career potential.
