What do I have to do to become a pharmacy technician?
-
I am a college sophomore and my major is Chemistry. I need a job and I'd love a job that involves something related to my career path. Becoming a pharmacy technician seems perfect. I understand I have to get my certificate by applying to take an exam at ptcb.org. My main questions are: 1. Is there anything that I should study before taking the exam? Any recommended booklets or third party study guides? I know the website has practice exams but I want to actually study to be able to pass. I don't want to throw away $129.00. 2. After I take the test, do I just receive my certification? I will be able to apply at any Walgreens, CVS, or other places of that sort? Will I be eligible to do so? Thank you for your help. Please not that I do not have the time or money to enroll in a course (unless it is online, quick, and cheap). Also, I am 18 years old and I live in Florida.

Answer:
Hi Omar, Every state has slightly or very different requirements for becoming a pharmacy technician. For Florida, it is fairly strict in that you need to have approved formal training. You can see the details for free at: http://www.pharmacytechnicianhq.com/pharm-tech-schools-by-state/florida/ Based on what you have stated, I don't think becoming a pharmacy technician in Florida is going to work for you. If you decide to move to a different state, then there are many states that do not require formal training and the PTCB exam alone is enough. So, please do not study and pass the PTCB, because this alone will not let you practice as a pharmacy technician in Florida. In fact, Florida does not even require national certification at the moment. I would consider going to pharmacy school if you like chemistry.

I can't speak for the other stores, but if you apply at Walgreen's right now, they may hire you. If they do, you'll take some lessons on a computer in the store for about a week, and then start working in the pharmacy right away as a trainee. While you work, they will set you up to become certified. They require all their techs to be certified and will give you everything you need to be prepared. When they feel you're ready, they'll send you to wherever it is you take the test, and you'll get your certificate. Once you're certified, you'll resume work with a raise.
