Where can I find Licensed Practical Nursing programs?

Nursing or Surg Tech? What should I do...?

  • I originally wanted to go to nursing school (RN), but when i graduated high school there were no openings and a lot of schools had shut down there programs due to govt funding and lack of nursing education teachers. (I live in NY State) After a year of general education and prerequisites I got frustrated with waiting for an opening as I was far down on the waiting list and decided to go for surg tech. Its my first semester and I was just informed I need an A&P class finished in order to start my next semester, which I do not have, and was informed i didn’t need till next year..apparently that was wrong. Therefore I will probably have to take a&p 1 and 2, and wait until next spring semester to start surg tech classes again… I was recently informed that there were openings in the nursing program at my college and well as a few other colleges starting up again next fall as long as a&p grades were good. Should I say screw surg tech and waist all of the time and money I spent on it (900$ for books) and try and get into nursing? Or should I just finish my surg tech a year late, try and find a job (which i heard was hard) and eventually go back for nursing part time? Im so lost, what would you do in this situation?? I’m 19 by the way!

  • Answer:

Go for nursing! Many hospitals now don't hire surg techs but instead hire nurses to rotate being a circulating nurse in the OR and the surgical tech. I was told this when I went into the OR to watch in nursing school. The circulating nurse told me that the scrub nurse/surgical tech in the room IS a nurse and that most hospitals arent hiring surg. techs anymore when nurses can do both jobs.

There is a glass ceiling when you're a surgery tech. But when you're a nurse, you can work at many places, and do many things. Many people are waiting to get into the nursing school. You may have to move to another state to do that if you want to get in earlier (especially into a private school). You do what you have to but don't change the career because you have to wait a few years.
