Physical Therapy as a career............?

I want to do physical therapy as a career, do i first need to get a degree in Kinesiology before i do that?

    There are two types of physical therapy graduate programs. One leads to a master's degree in physical therapy and the other leads to a doctorate in physical therapy, or DPT. Since most states are now requiring physical therapists to possess a DPT, it is recommended that anyone wanting to become a physical therapist earn a DPT at an accredited university. DPT programs consist of both classroom and laboratory coursework in a wide range of subjects. Students must also complete a supervised clinical experience in order to earn their DPT. It will take 2 additional years of college after your bachelor degree to get a DPT. After graduating you can expect to make $100,000 a yr. Don't waste time and money getting a degree in Kinesiology because it isn't required.

(I gave a thumbs down to Prairie Girl for 2 reasons: 1) new grads are *not* going to make 100k and 2) you have to have a major in undergrad, and yes, many do major in Kinesiology, or biology, along with a Pre-PT track.) PT is a Grad School program, so you do need to major in something as an undergrad. Keep an eye on the requirements for the schools that you intend to apply to, for their volunteer requirements (usually 100+hours in a healthcare setting), and for the required courses). As for starting salaries, it is very dependent upon the area in which you work, AND geographical area. I suggest Monster.com and Craigslist.com for the area you plan on working in, to get an idea. (I moved once, and with 2 years of experience, I had to accept a $6/hour pay cut, because that was the going rate in my new city; thankfully I've moved back!).
