Medical question?

Medical question....Can you please help?

  • My husband was admitted twice to the hospital on September 8th 2011. Both times were to different hospitals. He had recieved a new job in August 2011 which provide AAIC medical benifits. His insurrance didn't become effective til October 1st 2011. My question is do you think that his insurrance will cover for those two times he was admitted to the hospital? I was reading through his medical packet that came with his medical card and it had stated that they have a "Pre-Existing Conditions Benefit and Credit" Which also states The Pre-Existing Conditions Benefit Allowance will be provided only to an Insured Employee, and to his Insured Dependent(s) who were insured under the Participating Employer's prior plan that this Policy replaces and who becomes insured under the Policy on the Effective date of the Participating Employer's insurance under the policy. "Credit for Pre-Existing Conditions And Deductible Expense:" No major medical expense insurance benefits will be payable under the Policy for any expenses caused by, incurred for, or resulting from a "pre-existing condition" as defined in the policy. However, the "pre-existing condition" time limitation will be shortened by the Insurance Company by the period of time the Employee, or Dependent, was covered under Creditable Coverage if such coverage was continuous to a date more than 62 days prior to the Enrollment Date under the Policy. Does this mean that his insurance will cover for those two times considering it was 62 days prior to his insurances effective date? Please someone help. Thanks in advance.

  • Answer:

Usually health insurance starts on the effective date, which in your case was October 1st 2011. I do not believe the insurance coverage that was effective on October 1st will cover the hospital costs. Should you/your husband have had health insurance prior to this new insurance, it would be covered by that one. I'm not sure what company your insurance is through, but Blue Cross Blue Shield does their coverage the way I mentioned in the first sentence. Just to be on the safe side, give the insurance company a call!
