Career Change to Physical Therapy?

  • I'm a 23 year old teacher teaching at a middle school and realized that I do not have a passion to teach. I started looking into physical therapy because I wanted to help people. I honestly don't want to work with kids. I have a bachelor's degree in Business Management and Economics. I know that I have to take prerequisites science courses to even be considered for DPT school. I am worried that if I do a career change and take all the required courses and not get into a DPT school that I would waste all my time and money taking these science courses and not get into a DPT school at all. My cumlative GPA is a 3.65 and I'm worried that it's not enough to get into a DPT school, especially with a business degree. What are some advice that would help me get into DPT school. I am more than determined to change careers but I'm worried that I won't be able to get my foot into DPT school. Do you know anyone with a business degree that was accepted into a DPT school?

  • Answer:

The degree is not going to matter, because they are going to focus on all your pre-req classes that you take and how you do in them. You will just have to do your best & try--no one can predict how it will all work out. You can start off slow & see how it goes. You should schedule an appointment with a DPT adviser once you see how the science pre-reqs are going.

It doesn't matter what your undergraduate degree is in, just as long as you have completed all of the prerequisites for the program. And a 3.65 GPA is very good. But what will matter most of all is what grades you got in the prerequisite courses. But before you take any prerequisites shadow a physical therapist to see if it is a career you really would like. Good luck..

Physical therapists (PTs) help rehabilitate patients, including accident victims and individuals with disabling conditions such as low-back pain, arthritis, heart disease, fractures, head injuries, and cerebral palsy. They provide services that restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities.
