What jobs can you get with an associates degree in nursing?

Demand for nurses... Can I get a job with an associates in Nursing?

  • Hello all. I am in an Associates program in Nursing in NYC. I just wonder if I would be able to get a job after college in 2 years as a registered nurse with an associates. I spoke to a nurse she said there are no jobs... nursing field is too saturated and you need a bachelors. On one hand everyone says that there are big vacancies in nursing and nurses are in big demand. listen, i will get my bachelors in nursing after my associates via a RN-BS program, but in the meanwhile I still want to work 1 - 2 years while pursuing that bachelors degree. Also im a male... male nurses should be in demand no? I just wonder if the associates is good enough for a job and how the demand for new nurses is in new york city and in the US in general.

  • Answer:

New York is one of the states that is passing legislation to make the BSN the minimum. If you look at all the help wanted ads for hospitals in NY, you will notice they prefer those with BSNs already. Right now the market is very tight with many new grad RNs looking for work. Employers have a lot to choose from and will probably not want someone who say they "will get their BSN later". That might be a false promise and hospitals want to be in good position for magnet status and the upcoming education changes.

In most states an associates degree in nursing qualifies you to take the state nursing test to become an RN. Obviously you can't work as an RN until you pass that test. Didn't your school explain that?
