What are some of the highest paying jobs in medicine?

Highest paying medical job?

  • I'm hopefully going to study medicine soon in uni, but I was just wondering what the highest paying medical jobs are, I heard it was a cardiologist, which happens to be what I want to go into. I'm just curious :)

  • Answer:

Worry about the studies & the schooling first. Because if u want to be in the medical field, that should be that last thing on your mind. & plus you won't see the real money until your like 30, due to the schooling during your 20's.

The highest paid medical job is the CEO for a health insurance company. Those make multiple-millions per year. The next would be the CEO of a group of hospitals or health clinics - again multiple-millions per year. Unfortunately, no doctor makes a fortune any more. With shrinking insurance reimbursement (that is why the insurance executives people get paid more than the doctors), criminally high malpractice insurance premiums (again, going into the pockets of the insurance company executives), low payments from hospitals and outrageous medical school expenses (if you take a loan for medical school, then you are going to end up paying 1/2 or more of what you make for the next 20 years to just pay for school). If you are looking for a career to grow wealthy in, then that is no longer being a doctor. If you have a passion for medicine, then yes, you can make a decent living as a doctor, but that is about it, unless you get really lucky and are able to tailor your practice to the very affluent. I've linked an article that gives ranges of pay for various types of doctors. The top figures seem impressive, but that is for the top one or two performers in the country - and are likely for those that are in private practice before expenses are taken out (like staff cost, office cost, insurance, etc.). Take a look at the lowest wages - that is the more likely salary that you will make. As you can see, those figures are squarely in the middle class tier - and the salary ranges are comparable to what a plumber or auto mechanic could make.

Here are the numbers from the Department of Labor. Surgeons have the highest incomes. I'll leave it to you to investigate the specialties.
