Is nursing a good job for me?

Good job to accompany nursing school...?

  • I'm a sophomore in college wrking on pre-reqs for nursing school. Just wondering whats a good job to get involved in that could help me get a better perspective of this profession, or look good on my resume. Possibly help pay for school??

    I currently work as a Med Tech at an assisted care facilty while I'm in nursing school. This is an excellent job for me because I pass out meds, give insulin, eye drops, breathing treatments, etc and learn what works and what doesnt for people! This job also requires light CNA duty, which is not too difficult in an assisted care facility. In a nursing home, it would be much more hands on and...bathroom duty. Check out the credentials in your state and see if you can even work as a patient transporter at the hospital if you want to get used to that setting.

You could volunteer at clinic, hospital, or go on a mission when you're on vacation from school. That way you can put it on your resume and it will make you a better candidate when being looked over for a job.

I wouldn't recommend a full time job once you start nursing school but if you want to work find a job that will expose you to the nursing field. Many nurses either were CNAs before going to school or while in nursing school. It's not a glamorous job but you will acquire skills that will directly help you both in school and once you become a nurse. Keep your eyes open and ask questions and always be eager to learn new skills. Also, a lot of hospitals offer tuition assistance or scholarships and it never hurts to have your foot in the door when they are passing those babies out. Good luck in school, hope to see you joining the nursing ranks soon.
