What is harder medical assistant or medical coding and billing?
-
I am will aware that they are both difficult and time taking. But, I really would like to know some insight on what they do. I have an opportunity to pick what I want. I am not asking for someone to tell me where to go. I would like to know.... "the dirt" on the job if you will. Thank you!!

Answer:
Do you prefer working with real, live people? Or are you happier working with numbers and charts and things that don't talk back? The two are very different jobs and I would suggest that your own personality should be the guiding factor in selecting the one that is right for you.

SHORTY
With both fields, medical assistant and medical billing & coding (though billing and coding are not synonymous :) there aren't supposed to be too many jobs despite what those private $$ career/tech schools say. The numerous training programs available have left the field saturated. Regarding MA, a lot of people have said how frustrating it is that most employers prefer applicants with 1-2 years experience in the field to possibly get the job. With medical billing, a lot of companies are outsourcing to Asia/India which also factors into why jobs are more scarce these days. In regards to medical coding, the person usually needs a couple of years experience doing coding tasks, certification(s) in the field and preferably completion of an accredited program to possibly get a job. For general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'medical assistants', 'bill and account collectors' or such. ('Medical coding' may be briefly mentioned under 'health and medical records technicians'.) If still interested in training, please only consider the more affordable county vo-tech school or community college as long as the program is accredited within the industry. Please steer clear of those online, for-profit schools (may have 'bricks and mortar' buildings and may be 'accredited') such as penn foster, capella, stratford career, university of phoenix, ITT tech, US career, everest, career step, devry, argosy, kaplan, ashford, walden, ashworth, remington, excelsior, strayer and others as they are merely out to 'make a profit' (and course credits may Not transfer to other schools): http://www.ripoffreport.com and can type into search.
