How can I have a nursing license in California?

Can you transfer a RN nursing license from Texas to California?

  • I am working on finishing up a RN program in Texas. My wife and I eventually want to move to California. I was just wondering how difficulty it would be to transfer the license?

  • Answer:

Its not really a transfer; you simply apply for a CA license. You can hold multiple state licenses. The NCLEX exam is national wide, not state specific; you take it once.

Many states in the US are part of a nursing compact agreement which makes transfer of the license pretty seamless (Google nursing compact states, I don't have a list handy). Otherwise, the they are not part of the compact agreement, you just apply for a license through the Texas state board of nursing. You just do a background check, show evidence of current licensure, pay the fee, and usually that's about it. Sometimes you have to show evidence of recent employment or recent graduation from your nursing program. It usually takes a few weeks to process and get the license issued.

I don't think you can buddy? :( I believe if you were a registered nurse you would be state certified. Oh nevermind yes you can. Just asked my instructor from Kaplan college. :)
