What are the pros and cons of being nurse?
-
Hey everyone so I am in my last week of being a sophomore in high school! Yay for the upcoming summer. So I am a 15 year old. And anywho I am in a magnet program to become a CNA by the end of my Junior year. So I want here the pros and cons of being a RN, because for one I want to major in nursing. Although I want to know the reality of it instead of the fluffy stuff that you dream of before you actually get into it. Also, this is more like a BQ, but if you want can you answer this: do you think I could work as a nurse? I really don't want to clean a grown- adults butt (I might not want to do it at first but I may be able to stand it after a while), and I cannot stand throw up besides if it is from a baby, I can't stand something really gory like if someones eye ball is hanging from the socket, & I can stand watching surgeries. I do like working with people. I don't like being yelled at or strong criticism, but I need to work on that.

I think it's great that you are thinking about your future, Kayla, but you do have plenty of time to make a decision since you won't actually go into the nursing program until your third year of college. Don't think for a minute that the duties of a CNA will give you a feel for nursing. A CNA checks blood pressure, takes pulse, assists patients with things like getting in and out of bed, showering, dressing, feeding, walking, toileting, including diapers, wiping, suppositories and enemas. Nurses don't do those things. As a nurse you will see blood, and vomit (but you won't be the one to clean the vomit up). If you don't like the gory side of it you won't have to work in surgery, however you will have clinicals in nursing school which means you'll be shadowing an RN through all departments of the hospital to observe and assist. That means you see it all - labor and delivery, newborn nursery, pediatrics, surgery, orthopedics, coronary care, ER, etc. Once you have your license you'll be qualified to work in any dept but you can choose the one you prefer. The pros - you'll always be able to find work you'll earn a good salary you'll work in a respected career you have a choice of different working environments - hospital, doctor office, clinic, nursing home, school, health-care insurance co, military you'll feel good knowing you're helping people The cons - you'll earn a good salary but you won't get rich people are sick 24/7 so it may be you who has to work on Christmas Day you can't get careless & make mistakes & if you do the doctor will tell you about it big time you can't save everyone, and it's not easy to tell parents their child has died

Imagine a sick or elderly person messes their bed or suddenly throws up all over the bed Giving a bed bath to patients genuinely too infirm to use the normal bathing facilities
"A CNA checks blood pressure, takes pulse, assists patients with things like getting in and out of bed, showering, dressing, feeding, walking, toileting, including diapers, wiping, suppositories and enemas. Nurses don't do those things. " Wrong. A nurse will do all these things.Just because there are CNAs on the floor does not mean that these things will not be your responsibility as well.If a patient needs help you can't just go and get a CNA to do it.If there is vomit you will have to clean it up. Once you get out of school you will not be qualified to work in ALL areas, You will get a chance to experience many areas but you will not get the full specific training required for say, pediatrics, oncology or trauma nursing. You have to get the extra training required after you get out of school.
I volunteer at a hospital once per week... Here is my unprofessional opinion. Pros: - It doesn't take a highly intelligent person to be a nurse (no offence) and the majority of their work is just filling out simple charts and administering IV's, that kind of stuff. - You get to wear comfortable clothing - no suits - You get to help people which is always good. Cons: - Low pay (In my opinion) - Have to deal with graphic things that I could never do
