Pediatric RN Nurse vs. Pediatrician MD?
-
Okay Im 16 years old and trying to figure out what I want to be. Ever since I was little I loved taking care of people when they were sick and I just love making people feel happy in general. Plus I love kids and babies. So I know I have a passion for that. But I can't chose between becoming a RN or a MD. Here are things I like and don't like about becoming an RN or MD. Cons of MD/Pediatrician The long stressful years Even when you finally finish those long stressful years you have to pay back anywhere from $100,000 to $500,000 in debt. A Pediatrician is one of the lower paying doctors it will take even longer to pay back the debt You will finish paying your debt in about your late 30's or early 40's. So you can start spending your actual income during those years. (which IMO is old) Your entire 20's and part of your 30's is ruined with stress and hard work Pediatricians dont have time for family if they work in hospitals because of their irregular hours and family and friends is very important to me Pediatricians can have time for family & friends if they have their own private practice but that costs a lot of money Have kids after you pay medical school debt and get a house which would be in late 30's or early 40's (high chance of not being able to have kids) Pros of Pediatrician In the end you will have a good salary. I live in NYC so they make on average $135,000 a year I get to live in a nice house in the suburbs of NYC like Long island or Westchester with a good school district and big backyard in a $700,000+ house Get to buy big name brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Chanel etc.. somewhat often and tons of lower end designer brands like Coach, Juicy Couture, Express, Polo, Gap Afford to eat at fancy restaurants once in a while and drive a nice car and go on nice vacations( even though im not fussy about cars) Get to cure someone's illness Cons about RN Income is not as extravagant as a MD Lives in a typical lower middle class lifestyle Buying clothes from lower end designer brands, maybe rare occasions of LV or Gucci (and I love fashion) Lives in a small home. Like a $400,000 home with a not so big backyard and a decent school district (although if that's the case I might send my kids to private school) Rare vacations, rare occasions of eating out and if do eat out frequently eat out at middle class restaurants like apple bees, red lobster, fridays etc... Pros of RN Decent salary, 98,000 in NYC Has more patient interaction than MD which I like Has more years making money than a MD because you graduate in 4 years Have more time for family and friends than an MD Moves into a house before an MD Can have kids before MD because you dont have to worry about paying medical school debt Which career would be better for me in your opinion? Either way I like the fact that you can care for people in both professions

Answer:
Well which is more important to you living a luxurious lifestyle or spending more time with your friends and family? I think Pediatric Nursing would be better for you because you get to care for patients with a more holistic approach, get to have a family, live a semi-luxurious lifestlye, while making a very nice salary. Plus you can always become a Nurse Practitioner which gives you the opportunity to perform a lot of duties physician's can. However, if you have a strong desire to become a MD then go for it. It is not too old to have kids in your 40's as that is a very normal age for career women to have kids. But you should really consider NP because you can make diagnoses, write prescriptions, and more!
