What does a nursing career entail?

Career Ideas for an Unorthodox Double Major (Chemical Engineering and Nursing)?

  • I have a major in chemical engineering and will graduate in May with a nursing degree. I believe that nursing is my calling, but the economy is still so anemic for new grads I do not want to end up unemployed. While there is a demand for nurses, it is hard for new graduates to get jobs. (Look up any online forums if you do not believe me). Nursing will be my main focus as far as jobs that I am looking for. However, first and foremost I want employment, since I know the longer I am unemployed the more undesirable I will be to HR reps. As long as I am working I figured I will still be in the "employment club". My main question is there is a special niche out there for my background? I have limited but good internship experience in refining, volunteered at an ER, and am currently busy full time with an accelerated nursing program. I am in my mid 20's with no ties. I am willing to move anywhere, work as hard as I can, and do anything. Let me know. I have decent GPA's as well.

  • Answer:

The "new grad" program at larger hospitals will accept brand new nurses but those positions get filled quickly. If you live in small cities, you may consider moving. You said you have good experience during your clinical rotations—did you develop good relationship with the staff, as well?
