What does an EMT do during his/her job?

Is a paramedic/EMT a difficult job?

  • I am 14 and I really want to be an EMT and then if I like the job I want to be a fully trained paramedic. Is it a difficult job? What are the hours like? Is it an exciting job? What subjects would I need to concentrate on at school?

    To echo what Judy has said, it certainly can be a difficult job, but it is really rewarding and a lot of fun. It can also be tremendously boring at times. Sitting at the station, or sitting somewhere on coverage just waiting for a call to come in. Hours vary depending on the service. I work for a very large service and have lots of different shift patterns. Most of the full time rotations work on a four days on-four days off pattern, working two day shifts, two night shifts, four off. These are either, 12 hour shifts, 11 hour days-13hour nights, or 10 hour days-14 hour nights. As for school, focus on getting good marks all around and being active in the community (volunteering and such). Make sure you take Biology and Chemistry. Best of luck!

It depends on where you work. If you can only get a job with a private ambulance you won't be doing anything too exciting. Try to plan on being a firefighter. Train to be in top physical shape. Firefighters will usually work 24 hour shifts. The Paramedic class is not that difficult so you really don't have to knock yourself out worrying just as long as you have a high school diploma or GED.

Yes it's a hard job but can be a rewarding one. Hours include weekends, and include all shifts. Sometimes it's probably fairly boring, while you're waiting for a call, and sometimes can be TOO exciting. Through high school, focus on getting good grades across all of your subjects, and be sure to take science classes.
