Is there less of a demand for Pediatric nurses?

Is there a demand for medical sonographers? Why is there only a demand for nurses?

  • I am thinking about going into the medical field (not nursing) but i feel like thats the only job with job security because there is such a shortage. whenever i go to a hospitals website and look for job openings there is SO many for nurses but none for like radiology or medical sonographers (which is what i wanted to go for) should i not go to school for that? i am afraid i might not get a job after i graduate..

Just see it...but no, there is absolutely ZERO demand for nurses and more and more are just being pumped out of school. Look up "No nursing shortage" or "No Nursing jobs" on google. There might LOOK like there are TONS of openings for nurses, but remember, it's all relative to the population...and for every ONE opening about 80 -130 nurses are applying..that's insane..worse than teaching, etc. EDIT: "A", I'm in NYC. There aren't ANY jobs out here. It's a huge misconception that people have.

I am a registered sonographer who graduated in 2010. I am willing to move anywhere in the United States (yes, including Alaska) and have applied to over 100 positions all across the country. The only job I have right now is a PRN position where I get to work one day a month, if I'm lucky. And I AM lucky, because over half of my fellow graduates have no job at all. Medical sonography used to be a good career, but the field is completely saturated now. It's nearly impossible to find a PRN job that is willing to give a new grad a chance, much less a full time job. The only way I would recommend anyone to go into the ultrasound field is if you're independently wealthy and you don't need to have a job after you graduate - because the chances are that you won't have one once you graduate. As for myself, I'm considering going back to school for something that will actually let me get a job to support myself. Nursing isn't that great of a field to enter right now, either. Go to allnurses.com and see how many new graduate nurses are there who can't find work!

It depends where you live. You do have visit some forums for sonographers. I looked at this career a while back and it does seem like there are not a lot of jobs out there. You have to be willing to relocate, possibly to a big city (NY, Chicago, LA). From what I've read, schools accept a bunch of people but then they end up with no jobs (usually, school doesn't help to look for it). With nursing it's different. Nurses leave, come back, and hospitals need a lot of them. With sonographers, once they get a job they stick to it. Some will work for years at the same hospital. If this is what you REALLY want to do in life then go for it but finding a job may be tough.

I think the demand for medical sonographers is pretty low right now due to people who have positions are staying in them, and hospitals not hiring right now. There isn't just a demand for nursing, there are other careers like: Occupational therapy assistant, Physical therapy assistant, Occupational therapist, Physical therapist, Respiratory therapist, Speech language pathologist, and Physician assistant. There are other careers that are in demand, they just aren't talked about so you have to search a little more. Go on websites like juju.com or indeed.com to see jobs that are in demand and where they are.
