Is it hard becoming and being a nurse?

Question about becoming a nurse (RN)?

  • Let me start off by saying that I’m not exactly the smartest cookie out there. I get decent grades in school only because I work really hard. In high school I didn't try very hard in school because I had such low self esteem. I'm in community college now and I’m doing a lot better in school then I’ve ever done in the past. (Then again I’m not taking any hard science/math courses) Anyway let me fast-forward to my question...can a student like me become a nurse? I love helping people and I’m a very hard worker. But like I mentioned earlier I’m not Einstein…not even close! Is becoming a nurse, specifically a registered nurse a realistic goal for me? Oh and please leave honest/friendly answers. I’m only saying this because there seems to be A LOT of haters out there. Thanks!!

    Honey, you don't have to be Einstein to be a good nurse. And honestly, Einstein would ahve made a lousy nurse, he'd get too distracted with his own work and needs to care for patients. Yes, you can. You can get help with hard science and math courses - you can ask classmates or teachers. Dedication and motivation can take you a very long distance and you have that in spades. I think you'd make a great nurse. And, you'd also make a good physical therapy assistant, nursing assistant, medical assistant. Look at your options. From what you say, what comes to mind for me about you is seeing you work in a doctor's office and taking care of patients. You'd be great, and I really recommend that you look in that direction if that's what you desire. I think a little encouragement will help you overcome your feelings of inadequacy, so I'd like to encourage you strongly to do what it is you desire, to pursue what you feel strongly about. It will go a long way to putting a huge smile on your face to accomplish something you feel good about. I studied nursing, it wasn't for me because as much as I liked helping people, it pained me to see them ill. I worked in a doctor's office for awhile, but ended up studying art later in life and now I'm an artist and photographer - but I still have an interest in health and medicine and study it to offer advice to people for alternatives. And that's another thing you might want to look at - careers in alternative medicine. You have a lot to digest, and I believe you have the potential to go the distance. And if you have those days when you feel you can't do it, remember my words, that you can.

If you study hard, pay attention in class, work ahead, and have no outside distracting factors (children, husband, boyfriend, partying, etc...) you can do it! You have to be entirely devoted to your studies.

If it's something you really want you can do it. I don't want to give you the wrong impression. It's challenging. You'll have to study, but it will be worth it. This reminds me of a girl I know who was rebellious in high school, a poor student and had to go to summer school more than once. She is now in medical school. If she can do it anyone can. Are you aware that you can become an RN by getting an associate degree? Just believe in yourself.

Nursing school is TOUGH. In order to be accepted to the program one of the requirements is a very high grade point average.In addition, schools have a long waiting list. See a counselor. Only they can tell you if it is feasible for you. They should also be able to direct you to a career using your desire to help people. Check out All Nurses.
