What's the best nursing school?

Whats a good part-time job while going to nursing school?

  • Answer:

See if you can get a part-time job working in as a nurses aide in a specialty you're interested in. Working as an aide will give you experience, time management skills and the ability to network on a floor you want to work in. I worked as a surgical tech for a cosmetic surgeon and upon graduating the doctor hired me as one of his nurses. One of my friends was interested in working for as a pediatric ICU nurse, so she began working as an aide there first. After graduating, she was offered a job as well.

In Washington, after you have had one clinical rotation in nursing school you can apply for a nurse tech position. As a nurse tech, you make more than a CNA does and you can do more. You can do pretty much anything you have done in school with the exeption of meds, administering blood and doing anything with central lines. What you can do really depends on the facility and department you work in though. I work at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital as well as Tacoma General Hospital as a nurse tech. These positions are on call, I sign up for shifts a month or two inadvance and am required only to work 3 8-hour shifts per month minimum and during the summer I work up to 65 hours/week (it's really your decision on how much you want to work). As a nurse tech I make $17/hr when I work evenings (3:30-11:30) and $16/hr when I work days. This position by far helps you the most when it comes to clinical rotations in school just by increasing your comfort level and experience. I have heard from my classmates that work in the ED that they get to do a variety of things, more than I get to do on the med-surg floor I work on, there they splint, start IV's, etc. but really experience any where as a nurse tech is valuable. To find a job as a tech you need to apply online such as through the multicare or fransiscan databases. I know the students that did not work in a medical related job wished they had, it really gives you a leg up. Hope this helps and goodluck!
