Need advice on nursing career?

Help! Im so confused. Im interested in nursing and I have no background on healthcare. I have a degree on fashion design and currently work as visual merchandiser in a fashion company. It sounds glamorous but the money isnt that good. Money isnt the only motivation for me to do nursing. I know the salary is good but I like helping people too. My concern is that I cant quit my job or reduce the hours because it pays my bills. and I heard horror stories about how intense nursing school is and it demands all your times. Should I get a loan? or do you think I should keep my full time job and do nursing school part time? omg..I dont know what to do

Hi. I've been a hospital nurse for 9 years now. My best advice for you is that money should be your only motivation to get into this. DO NOT become a nurse if you want to help people. You will be burnt out before you know it. Nursing is an extremely difficult job even on the rare good days. If you go through with this be prepared to work your tail off for every red cent. It's good money, but it is hard-earned thankless money. Be prepared to be treated like dirt by doctors, patients, families, and other nurses. I stopped wanting to help people a long time ago. Now I only want to do a good job and treat people with dignity and earn a paycheck. Nursing has been good in that I've earned a decnt living, it's flexible, and I'll always have a job. There are many cons, however. Google "why I hate nursing" and you will get a very accurate potrayal of what nursing is really like. It's more akin to digging trenches than the ridiculous portrayals that you see on TV. Nursing School is a cinch compared to actually working as nurse. Nursing school also teaches you how to be a nurse in the 1950s, not how to be a nurse on a modern day shortstaffed unit with 300 pound patients defecating in their beds, crazy family members demanding coffee, rude doctors, and lazy no-where -to -be -found nursing assistants. Sorry to sound negative. I sometimes intensely regret my decision to become a nurse. It will rot your soul if you let it. Good luck. It's not for the faint of heart.

You can go to school part - time while taking the pre-reqs needed for nursing school. Having a fashion design degree, you have alot of sciences that you'll need to be taking, and other pre-reqs. Once you are accepted into the nursing program and start the actual nursing courses, you aren't going to be able to work full-time (unless you are working nights). Nursing school is going to take up most your time with clinicals, lectures, courses, labs and all the additional courses you have to take other then nursing. If your job is very, very flexible and you are a super person, then maybe you could do it. I sure couldn't have and know many nurses and students that couldnt do that. If your heart is on nursing, look into loans - at least you know that you will have a good job when you graduate and maybe you can arrange with a hospital to help pay those back.

well to be honest for me i decided to go into nursing because i am tired of getting no respect working in law firms for the past 8 yrs. and getting low pay. so i decided that i wanted to be a nurse where i can help people which i love doing. i did the cna course just to get an idea of nursing and I loved it. i did my externship working in a nursing homeand i loved it. i gave this resident thats what you call people that lives in a nursing home (residents) a full bath. and feed and change them so it was a cool experience. i planned on quiting my job a legal secretary to work as a cna, but then i know they do not make much. but then again i do want the experience (thats important) for me. i go to school right now taking classes towards being an RN and i paid out of my pocket, i am willing to do what ever i have to do to make it happen for me. if a nurse you want to be then by all means bust your behind to become one ...good luck
