What is a 'paramedic nurse?

Paramedic to Nurse? Possible or not?

  • My friend has a friend who knows a guy who has a friend who just finished a paramedic school and becoming a nurse. He said that that guy has a paramedic license and taking an online classes to become a nurse. Sounds like BS to me or it's not? Is it really true that a person with paramedic license can take some (he said it's 1 year course) online classes and become a nurse? THANKS!!!

  • Answer:

It depends. There are varied education requirements for an EMT/paramedic. I know in Arizona, there were only a few classes you had to take before you could test for an EMT. In other states, it's a two year degree. Some EMTs/paramedics already have bachelors degrees. However, I see nursing and paramedics as almost two completely separate careers. Personally, I don't see how one will easily translate to another. I have a degree in physical therapy - it doesn't mean I can take a few classes and become an RN.

Not BS. It's a bridge course that an be taken online. Totally legit. Here is a blog by a paramedic who actually went through the online course: http://medicscribe.com/2009/12/paramedic-to-nurse-program/ Edit - The medic who went through the program was straight forward. He said there were no clinicals. There were not. He had a practical exam, which is not the same thing as clinicals. Nursing students, like many other students in medical professions, spend time doing clinical rotations in their line of work (e.g. a Nurse does clinical rotations in different areas of the hospital, a paramedic does clinical rotations in hospital and on an ambulance). What that medic is saying is the program does not have those clinicals. However, for testing, they have a practical lab in lieu of doing clinicals. The point is, a paramedic can go to school online to become an RN, as I said before.

Paramedic to RN is absolutely possible. I taught nursing school for 2 yrs and did have one student who was a paramedic/EMT. She completed her 2 yr course of student for Associate Degree RN. The length of time required for this would vary in different states. Probably a paramedic would choose a high-tech nursing job such as ICU, ER, etc.

It is impossible for any nursing program to fully train a person online only. The state nursing boards and accrediting agencies require a certain amount of CLINICAL training and testing for a program to be approved. The paramedic to RN online program that was referred to in the previous answer is deceptive in its description. The person writes "There are no clinicals" in one spot, and then further down the page they refer to their clinical training and testing: "The CPNE (Clinical Performance in Nursing Exam) is a three day practical test held at various testing sites (hospitals) across the county. On the first day, you are tested on four lab stations (IV push, IM/SQ Injection, IV Drip Medications, and Wound Care). If you fail any or all, you get a chance to retake them the following afternoon. Fail one station twice, and they send you home." http://medicscribe.com/2009/12/paramedic-to-nurse-program/ So short answer is that online training is available, but it will never be 100% of the requirements.
