what is Civil Service Examination?

What is the civil service examination for social work? how often is this test in NYC? any study material?

  The social work civil service exam (or any NYC civil service exam for that matter) qualifies you to work for the City of New York local government for that specific job title once you have taken and passed the exam. I have never taken the social work exam but I do know that you need a Masters of Social Work degree to even qualify. I do not think there is any study material for the exam but you do have to become licensed with in a certain time frame (I believe within a year of being employed as a Social Worker). Most NYC exams come out ever 4 years or so, give or take, unless it is a high turnover or very high needs position then it may come out more often. I currently work for the City of New York and am hoping that by the time I finish my Masters of Social Work I would qualify to take that exam :)
