What do part time retail job recruiters look for?

• Now I have a big problem with not being able to even get an interview for a job. I'm looking for a simple retail hourly position for a part time job (think Barnes and noble, blockbuster, etc. Im really knowledgeable about games and movies) but I can't even seem to land an interview. I feel like it may have something to do with something that I put in the application or on my resume, or maybe even a bad answer in the questionnaire.... the point is that I NEVER get an email back after an online application, as they don't even send you a rejection letter if your not in the first cut. Any tips and tricks I need to take into account? i figured a simple hourly retail job shouldn't be hard to get but apparently I'm wrong... btw I have about a year of experience working at a college bookstore, which should make my chances better, but it's not seeming to...

  Have you gotten a reply acknowledging receipt of your application? If not, send an email asking for that. You should at least get a confirmation. If your application lists any arrests, drug issues, or non-resident status in the US, then you will not be asked to interview for a position. If that's not the case, then I suggest trying smaller retail firms that may be more open to hiring. Also, check www.craigslist.com for a list of employers who are hiring. Just be sure to cofirm the legitimacy of the company. And, I hired part timer for a retail store and mail order company for seven years. I always looked for someone who had a flexible schedule, reasonable wage request, and good references. Good luck on your job search!
