What is a direct marketing job?

• I have a mysterious interview for a direct marketing job in a few days. The suspense is killing me. I'm not exactly sure how these jobs work...for instance how does pay typically work with these jobs? Commission, salary, hourly? Can someone give me an example of a well-known direct marketing job? I know that direct marketing usually goes directly to the targeted audience/desired clients and advertises to them specifically, but I have no idea how that works in a business sense. This is an entry level position where they would train me if I am accepted, but I'm too impatient to find out what this is all about. The company website reveals nothing.
