In calculating the gross profit margin, Why do we calculate over the sales revenue not the cost of sales?

because sales is calculated at the fill price which is unrealistic because you might offer a discount or you might find a product which isn't to the full market standard so you offer that one at a small discount so sales revenue allows you to input the price it was sold at rather than the price u expect to sell it at
