How might an undercover FBI agent be found out?
-
As part of my Creative Writing course, I'm having to write the first 15 minutes of script for a pilot TV show, and mine is a crime thriller. It begins with a young FBI agent going undercover to try and get information from an arms dealer. The arms dealer rats him out and kills him. Originally, the dealer recognised the gun he was carrying as a standard issue FBI firearm; but my tutor pointed out that, if the agent was undercover, he wouldn't be carrying that particular weapon in the first place. I did consider the fact that the agent might be wearing a wire; but for one thing, he is searched upon his arrival and also, someone else is later shot in the same episode having been found wearing a wire. So now I'm stuck! Someone else suggested that maybe the agent could say something "Fed-ish" but I don't really know enough about this kind of thing to make that work. How might an undercover FBI agent give himself away?

Answer:
Actually the agent may be carrying his service pistol as the two choices FBI agents have are the GLOCK 22 and GLOCK 23, two of the most popular handguns in the US. Nobody is going to assume he's an FBI agent due to the gun he carries because it's a common gun regardless. Maybe you could use a discrepancy in the FBI agent's fictitious background? Maybe the arms dealer asks him a question about his fake background and the FBI agent makes a mistake or forgets? (eg. he asks what prison the agent was in and he gives the wrong one, etc...)

To catch an undercover agent you have to first figure out what makes an undercover agent different from a real criminal. Then focus on detecting those things that make him different. -He is essentially a 'good' guy. -He doesnt have a long history in crime. -He has to record evidence (otherwise its pointless to have him there) -He has to relay that evidence to the FBI at some point. -He probably has to 'check in' with the FBI every so often. -Someone in the FBI knows him. The FBI agent would have a limit to the crimes he could commit while undercover. So if he backs out of something its -possible- they could suspect him.. although a FBI agent isnt the only one that would back out of some things. He might even try and stop the arms dealer doing something like murder. The arms dealer could suspect someone is FBI and tell different people about different deals, based on which ones the FBI 'busts' he could figure out who the FBI agent was.. eg. they tell tom about a deal by the bridge and tell harry about a deal by the ferry.. if the FBI busts the deal by the bridge.. he knows its tom. (Although i think the FBI would be smarter than this) Another way would be if the arms dealer is paying off someone in the FBI itself. They could tell the arms dealer he is undercover. The easier way is to catch him trying to gather evidence, find a wire on him or catch him calling in the info about the deal. Maybe by following him to see who he meets. These all have some problems that may not work in real life, but they are atleast believable enough for your story. You could probably combine a few of those together, like have someone he paid tell him theres an agent. Then have him try a few things and narrow it down until he finds out who the agent is. Goodluck catching your mole.
