How old do you have to be to audition for American Idol?

How do they chose American Idol audition contestants?

  • when i see the early audition shows, there are 1000s of people at big stadiums. they can't audition everyone, there's too many people to even talk to everyone, so how do they chose the ones that actually get to audition before the judges? thanks.

    (ive heard)u hav 2 go thru 3 auditions:one 4 producers n which they cut thousands,one where they cut hundreds and the 3rd is for the judges

By the time you would get to the celebrity judges, you will have gone through 2 or 3 other rounds. The first round has you singing together with 5 or 6 other contestants, then if you make it you will sing solo for a another few rounds. As you can tell by the audition episodes, the preliminary judging panels are looking for talented contestants as well as contestants who will make "good television." It just sucks that this means that maybe 1/3rd to 1/4th of the contestants who go to the celebrity judges are folks who are just wasting time, and taking a slot away from a truly talented individual.
