Bleeding while on birth control?

Birth control withdrawal bleeding or miscarriage?

  • On April 4th, I received an HCG Quantitative blood test. The results came back showing that I had slightly elevated HCG levels indicating that I am either very early in pregnancy OR that I must have already had a miscarriage and the levels were on the decline. I had been on the birth control pill for all of March, however I had been very bad about taking it on time. In fact, I would sometimes take it 8-10 hours late. In addition to that, I was also on an antibiotic for the entire month of March, which, as I now know makes birth control very ineffective. As soon as I found out there was a possibility that I am pregnant, I stopped taking the birth control pill. As I expected, two days after stopping the pill, I got my period. I suppose I do not understand how I could still be pregnant? This period was induced by NOT taking the birth control pill, so how could this be a miscarriage? I am getting another HCG Quantitative test done next week, however I am just confused as to what may be going on. What are your thoughts? Thanks!

  • Answer:

It is possible that the stopping of the birth control caused you to have a period. Many people who are pregnant (even not taking birth control) have a normal period during their pregnancy. If it had been a miscarriage there would have been some pain, and clotting along with your period.
