My DS wont connect to my Wi-fi?

Is it possible to connect two DS without WiFi?

I have a DS, but the area I'm currently at does not have WiFi. So a friend and I was wondering if there was a cord or something we could use to connect our two DS in order to trade Pokemon in Diamond and Platinum. I also want to duel other friends here on campus, but again there's no WiFi. So is there a cord I could use to connect them or a way around the WiFi? Maybe getting a computer to create a network that the DS can use to communicate or something?
Answer:

You can communicate using the Union Room (as long as you are near each other) just go upstairs in the Pokemon Center and to to the union room. As long as the Pokemon is in your party, you can trade it or battle with someone in the union room.
