How can I play my PC games with my Xbox Controller?

I've heard you can play games like Call of Duty 4, Fallout, CS:S, Minecraft, ect... with a controller but only CS:S has this function, but I heard about xPadder and when I went to download I found out it was $10 which I do not have so I was wondering if there is a free version, like an older version of it or something or any other programs?

Answer:
You have to download certain files from Microsoft to make the controller compatible with your computer. I done it before, but just don't remember the link.
