How can you tell how to fix the PS3 Yellow Light of Death?

Do you just have to buy either the new power supply or the heat gun and thermal compound to find out or can you look at the PS3 and see which process will fix the YLOD?

You have to first open the console and diagnose the problem (you'll have to know what to look for). As for testing the power supply, a multimeter should do the trick, as you can test the PSU's voltage.
