You can attatch a external USB hard drive but it can only have pictures, video and music on there. Also it needs to be formatted in FAT32 file system. To do this you just need to right click the drive in windows, click format and choose FAT32 instead of NTFS. This is the only way PS3 will recognise it. Game installs need to be on the PS3's HDD, i think its time you upgraded your hard drive -- its so damn easy. Just watch this video and you'll be done in about 15 mins. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNSytaL9hnI

backup all your data (save games, tropheys, music, video etc) to an external harddrive. Then buy an $80 320 GB SATA notebook hard drive off eBay. You can get a smaller one but a large one would be a better choice i think. Then Download PS3 Software 2.60 and reinstall the ps3 software. Then put all your data on the new harddrive and your ready to go. Game installs are getting larger, so you'll need a bigger harddrive eventually. I hear Kill Zone 2 will take 7 GB to install 0.0 The SATA hard drives are easy to install as well. It details it in the manual or you can You Tube search it. It also doesn't void your warranty, so your safe if it blows up :D

sony was genius in making the HDD slot. go to ebay and buy a 2.5" HDD, any will work. you can put any brand HDD as long as it 2.5" into your ps3 as an upgrade. just remove your original one and replace(only one screw). just save your game files to a memory card like a psp card or something and then put them back on the new HDD. you can re install your games onto the new HDD. I have a 320 GB HDD froms ome random company on ebay and it cost like 90$ almost a year ago. and i have 280 GB of free space remaining. about 19 PS3 games some movies music plus all my older games and what not. 320GB HDD and you will never worry about space again
