What is firmware?

What is the easiest way to install custom firmware on a PS3?

  • I have an 80GB PS3 (the one with 4 USB ports, built in card readers and backwards compatibility with PS2 games). It's currently running system software version 3.60 and I want to know how to install custom firmware. I hear Geohot's jailbreak works but from what I've read, there's not a whole lot you can actually do with it. I want to be able to use custom firmware to copy and play game backups off of the hard drive and I've read that this is actually possible, but my problem is that I can't find any consistent instructions and actual links to custom firmware. So far I understand that you can boot the PS3 in recovery mode, update the system software via USB (update the OFW to the same version as the CFW that you have) and then install the CFW. Now I just need to know where (and how) to download the CFW. Does anybody know?

  • Answer:

No, anything 3.56 and above cannot be jailbroken due to security measures added by Sony. You would have to first downgrade back to 3.55 or lower, then jailbreak it. Be aware, however, if you do it wrong, you could brick your system making it useless. Or if it does work, you can't play online on PSN or play any new games as updates are required which only official firmware gives.

If you're on 3.60 then there is no easy way to get custom firmware on your PS3. It's only possible to install CFW on 3.55 or lower.
