Is it possible to transfer data wirelessly between your PS3 and your computer?

Can I take the HD out of a busted PS3, put it in a case, and transfer all the data from it onto a new PS3?

  • My 80GB PS3 was hit with the yellow light of death recently, so my girlfriend bought me a new 160GB PS3. I want all of my save data onto my new PS3, and since I never backed them up in my old PS3 before, I can't keep the PS3 on for more than 2 seconds, so I can't do the direct console-to-console transfer. A friend suggested that I take the hard drive out of my busted PS3, put it inside a hard drive cover, and transfer the data from said hard drive onto my new PS3. Is this a legit strategy, or am I boned, unless I fix my old PS3? Thanks in advance to those that help.

  • Answer:

Sounds good in theory, but it wont work. The PS3 wont recognise it as an external drive and if you try and put the old drive in your new PS3 the first thing it'll do is try and format it. So, i'm afraid unless you can get your old PS3 working for a while, you're 'boned'....

It wont work. Hardware components are locked to a system, as with the files. The only way to transfer from ps3 to ps3 is to do a system back up using the backup utility on the ps3. You could plug it in with your method BUT your save files wont work because its encoded to work only on your old one. What you could do though is to SWAP drives (to the 80gb) and use the backup utility on the new ps3 and backup everything to an external hard drive, RESWAP (to the 160gb), and restore. This is the only way.
