Why does my ps3 keep overheating?

Trial and whats the error? PS3 red blinking light?

  • alright im going to try and start from the beginning. i have had an 80gb ps3 for the last 3 years and for the last year it has been overheating (it sometimes freezes when im on the browser too like watching movies and even playing online Black ops etc..) i do keep it laid down and it is in a very ventilated area. i do want to say that i dont always do the routine thing and clean the dust from the vents though. so about a week ago it finally had enough and i the next time i turned it on i saw something horrible! green light turned to YELLOW to RED BLINKING LIGHT!!!!! i freeked the **** out!! but i later learned that there were tons of guides on youtube that could teach me what i was most likely going to pay sony $150 for. so i bought some arctic silver 5 and got a heat gun (already had) and i started to learn. when the arctic silver 5 was delivered yesterday i finally tried it and it did work!! here is what i did 1. i disassembled my ps3 to the two big chip things 2. i cleaned the bottom two big silver things with alcohol wipes 3. i cleaned the two big chip things off with alcohol wipes also 4. i heated up the board for 15-20 minutes 5. i applied the arctic silver 5 (with my finger)-very fucing hot too 6. i reassembled everything i plugged it up and inserted a game without the video1 wires (just wanted to see if the red blinking lights stopped) but i forgot something a rookie like me would forget lol.... the damn hard drive! and like the dumbass i am i didnt realise that you could just slide it in so i took it apart again. once everything was finished i hooked everything up again only to find out that that damn red blinking light was back. so next i had no choice but to open my ps3 again and see what was going on. after disassembling everything again i realized that i shouldn't have used my finger because i put too much on the two chips, when i took it off there was alot on the bottom of the silver things, so whipped it off with alcohol, and i REMOVED some of the arctic silver 5 with my old debit card. so next i plugged it in and it still didnt work, so i opened it up again and there was no arctic silver touching the two silver things, and yes there is now a thin layer of arctic silver 5 on the chips i must confess that after the second time of thinning up the layer of arctic silver 5 i didnt heat up the board so now that you know of all of my screw ups lol now for the big question what the **** did i do wrong!! please make any suggestions because i get paid next week and i was going to buy some more arctic silver 5,( i did use up most of it and i dont think i will have enough for a second try)

  • Answer:

You didn't heat the board up, I am still amazed how people manage to get the Yellow light I have had the original 60 GB model since it first came out. Not being funny but why in god's name did you open it if you had no experience in what you were dealing with you should have rang Sony and see what they had to say about it. By putting alcohol on it is the worst thing you could have done it corrodes the chip just like water does to mobile phones. EDIT: That and your supposed to let the board cool down for half an hour before you try to re assemble it
